In mechanical engineering, backlash, sometimes called lash, play, or slop, refers to the clearance or lost motion in a mechanism caused by gaps between parts. Unless it's mitigated, backlash can cause positioning errors that can seriously hinder the performance of your application.
Â
Mitigating Backlash:
Â
Load-Side Encoder: Provides real-time feedback for motor compensation but increases cost and complexity.
Â
Built-In Backlash Compensation: Motion controllers offset backlash, but accurate measurement requires special tools.
